Selection weights

Selection weights not published

What the program says it looks for
  • Compassion, communication, collegiality and teamwork
  • Professional behavior and attitudes, self reflection, and respect for colleagues, family and self wellbeing
  • Academic potential, adaptability and resilience
  • Ranking determined by file and interview scores, with standardized interview questions and scoring
  • At least one obstetrics and gynecology elective is encouraged, with no on-site requirement
  • On the IMG stream, a pre-screening step using MCCQE1, NAC OSCE, and recency of practice or training comes before file review for top scoring candidates
Where research appears

File review includes a dedicated Research/Publications component, with scholarly activity on the CV and in reference documents, sustained scholarly work is not required but will be considered, and the interview evaluates scholarly activities.

Inference, not the program's wording

Research has no separate weight. It appears at file review and at interview, so it can help at both stages, but the program publishes no weights and states sustained scholarly work is not required, so no research share can be assigned.

Gaps: CaRMS lists the quotas (CMG 10, IMG 3) as approximate against the 10 CMG and 5 IMG residents shown here, and the program does not state an interview count.

Three confirmed papers, none in obstetrics, gynecology, or urology: one first-authored scoping review and two middle-authored papers in a single clinical field. No OBGYN research appears in the public record before the match.
Notable: Held several research coordinator, research assistant, and teaching assistant roles before and during medical school, alongside years of student organization leadership. Received a research award during medical school.
Additional items reported in the original research could not be independently confirmed and are excluded from the counts above.

Four confirmed papers, two of them directly relevant: a first-authored retrospective cohort and a middle-authored comparative study, both in gynecologic surgery. Pelvic floor surgery is treated as core gynecologic work, not urology adjacent. The other two are a second-authored systematic review on a medical education topic and a first-authored narrative review in an unrelated field, completed prior to medical school. Both OBGYN papers are original data, while the other two are reviews.
Notable: Presented the research at several student and specialty meetings and received a poster award. Held student education committee roles.

One confirmed paper, a second-authored cross-sectional survey in postpartum care, classed as directly relevant. Attribution rests on a manual identity match rather than a unique identifier.
Notable: Extensive prior OBGYN clinical training and practice abroad before matching. Earlier poster work received a poster award.

No countable publications could be confirmed for this resident. Three same-name items found in public sources were excluded because they belong to other researchers.
Notable: Founded student support and education initiatives and mentored applicants.

By far the largest record in the cohort, with 38 confirmed papers produced mostly over a short period during medical school. The great majority are short commentaries, perspective pieces, and narrative reviews on global health topics, with a smaller set of cross-sectional studies and reviews. Three papers are directly relevant, and eleven are first or second authored. Volume here reflects collaborative, mostly low evidence tier formats, so the count should be read alongside the paper types.
Notable: Led a volunteer research group, a role consistent with the collaborative, short-format output. Held a national OBGYN-focused student leadership role and student memberships in professional societies. Also peer mentorship and teaching experience, and a research placement abroad.
Some items rest on secondary indexes and could not be checked against primary article pages, so the count may be off by a small number. Three further listed items were excluded because attribution could not be confirmed.

Three confirmed papers, all outside OBGYN: two randomized trial reports from a basic science lab and a scoping review in health services research. The lab work stems from undergraduate and graduate research completed prior to medical school. One paper is second-authored.
Notable: Completed undergraduate and graduate research, received a national undergraduate research award, and took part in a student research project.
Additional items reported in the original research could not be independently confirmed and are excluded from the counts above.

One confirmed paper, a first-authored review in gynecologic oncology basic science. It is classed as directly relevant, but it comes from a graduate degree completed prior to medical school, so read it as basic science preparation rather than clinical OBGYN research.
Notable: Completed a graduate research degree in a related field. Co-founded an education initiative, presented a systematic review as a poster during medical school, and completed an OBGYN elective.

Six confirmed papers, and the only profile in the cohort with urology adjacent work: two middle-authored papers. The one directly relevant paper is a second-authored scoping review. The other three are middle-authored studies in a single non-OBGYN field. The adjacent papers were included after a manual identity match.
Notable: Led a conference abstract on a qualitative study, supported by a grant. Earlier led an undergraduate scoping review, received research funding, and helped organize a student display.

Five confirmed papers, four of them first or second authored, the highest lead author rate in the cohort. The one directly relevant paper is a first-authored retrospective review. The rest sit in one non-OBGYN pediatric field, including a systematic review and the published protocol for that same review, counted as separate publications.
Notable: No presentations, awards, or leadership roles could be found in public sources.

Four confirmed papers, none in OBGYN or urology: a second-authored systematic review, a middle-authored program study, a first-authored survey, and a health systems paper. Three were published prior to medical school. The survey is close to women's health in subject but is classed as public health, so other medical.
Notable: Holds a graduate public health degree. Worked as a research coordinator, held student editorial and society leadership roles, and has teaching assistant experience.

Four confirmed papers, all directly relevant, the most OBGYN focused record in the cohort: an undergraduate review completed prior to medical school, a meta-analysis, a systematic review published as a letter, and a retrospective cohort study. The cohort study appeared shortly after the match and was most likely listed on the original application as in preparation or pending publication, which is worth keeping in mind when benchmarking. A preprint of that work was not counted separately. Three are first or second authored.
Notable: Held student leadership roles and research roles across several settings, received an OBGYN elective award, and mentored undergraduate researchers.
Written descriptions on this page are intentionally general to protect resident privacy. Counts and authorship figures are unchanged.
Reading this data

Output is highly uneven. One profile accounts for 38 of the cohort's 72 confirmed papers, mostly short commentaries and narrative reviews, while the median resident has 3 and three residents have no findable publications at all. Set that one profile aside and the average falls from 4.8 to 2.4 papers per resident.

Specialty focused research is the exception rather than the rule. Only 8 of 15 residents have any directly relevant paper, the cohort holds 15 OBGYN relevant papers against 55 in other medical fields, and the only urology adjacent work comes from a single resident. Several records are entirely OBGYN relevant, and several matched residents offset a thin record with other depth, such as extensive prior clinical training, a graduate degree, or years of leadership and community building. Program weightings may change from year to year.

All data on this page was gathered from publicly available sources and verified to a high but not absolute degree of confidence. This profile is intended to give prospective applicants a general sense of what previously matched residents looked like, not to serve as a definitive or exhaustive record.
