What the program says it looks for
  • A strong academic foundation and a clear commitment to excellent patient care.
  • A genuine, lasting interest in psychiatry, with maturity, integrity, enthusiasm and compassion.
  • Teamwork, clear communication, humility, and the capacity to take feedback and adapt.
  • A personal letter that shows reflection, collaboration and life experience outside medicine.
  • A consistent academic record and student performance report. Broad clinical exposure is valued over many electives in psychiatry or at the program's own site.
Where research appears

Research and publications is one of ten file review components, references are asked to comment on research, and scholarly activities (research, teaching or quality improvement) is an interview component.

Inference, not the program's wording

Interviews are offered based on file review results, and research is one part of that file review, so it likely plays some role in who is invited. Because the program does not publish weights and invites roughly a quarter to a half of applicants, how much it counts cannot be told from this description.

Gaps: the description used here is for the 2027 match cycle, not the 2026 cycle this cohort matched in, so details may differ. Selection weights are not published, interviews per year are not published, CaRMS lists stream quotas as approximate, and an unlabeled "roughly 50%" figure in the file review statistics is not used.

Ten residents in this cohort are Canadian medical graduates and two are international medical graduates. Schools are shown as a set only and are not matched to the individual research profiles below, since that pairing could make individuals identifiable.

Four confirmed papers, all first or second authored, none in psychiatry. A first-authored light simulation paper and a second-authored photobiological implementation paper in Lighting Research and Technology describe a newly built model, the kind of methods work that stands apart from review writing. An earlier building simulation proceedings paper comes from the same pre-medical research phase, and all three are counted as Other Medical. The fourth is a second-authored narrative review in Current Opinion in Critical Care on light, sleep and circadian rhythm in critical illness.
Notable: Pre-medical research was in circadian lighting science, and the record includes a workshop talk on that work and a first-authored scoping review preprint on circadian rhythms in a neurovascular emergency, which is not counted.

Two confirmed papers. The first-authored paper is a clinical cohort study in Journal of Alzheimer's Disease on anticholinergic medication use at a rural memory clinic and later cognitive and functional change. Dementia care sits in neurology territory, so it is counted as Adjacent Specialty Research. The other is a third-authored content analysis in Canadian Journal of Public Health on readiness to practice, counted as Other Medical.
Notable: Holds a business degree (MBA) completed before medical school and worked as a research assistant on a readiness to practice project.

Five confirmed papers, three first or second authored, and the only profile in the cohort with three psychiatry-relevant papers. A middle-authored methods paper in Translational Psychiatry covers clinical CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 genotyping, and two second-authored qualitative studies, in PLoS One and BMC Psychiatry, examine patient access and barriers to rTMS for peripartum depression. The two remaining papers, in Cryobiology, are cartilage cryopreservation studies from an earlier surgery research phase, one first authored, counted as Other Medical.
Notable: Pre-medical research was in cryobiology and cartilage. A published correction to the genotyping paper was not counted as a separate publication.

One confirmed paper, second authored, in Journal of Healthcare Leadership on pitfalls and mitigation strategies for dyad leadership in healthcare, published in January 2026. It is healthcare research outside psychiatry and is counted as Other Medical.
Other publications under a similar name were reviewed and excluded as belonging to different researchers.

Notable: Completed an honours undergraduate degree in kinesiology and held student leadership and peer mentoring roles before and during medical school.
Other publications under a similar name were reviewed and excluded as belonging to different researchers.

Five confirmed papers, three first authored, with one psychiatry-relevant paper: a first-authored narrative review in Schizophrenia Bulletin Open on cannabidiol for patients with schizophrenia. The rest are broader medical work: a first-authored narrative review in International Journal of Molecular Sciences on resveratrol in cardiovascular disease, a middle-authored external validation study in Circulation, a middle-authored systematic scoping review in BMC Public Health on a public health approach to substance use, and a first-authored school-based sun safety intervention in Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery. All four are counted as Other Medical.
Notable: Led a local chapter of a global health advocacy group.

Two confirmed papers, both first or second authored. A sole-authored image piece in Canadian Medical Education Journal came early in training, and a first-authored survey study in Journal of Medical Regulation looks at selection criteria for international medical graduates in rural practice. Both are counted as Other Medical.
Notable: The survey study grew out of a medical school research project award.
Reading this data

Output varies widely across this cohort. Four of 12 residents had no public research found, three had a single paper, and the two highest-output profiles, five confirmed papers each, are also the only two with psychiatry-relevant work. They differ in shape: one centres on psychiatric treatment access and pharmacogenetics, the other pairs a first-authored schizophrenia review with broader medical work.

Most counted work sits outside psychiatry itself, in health systems, medical education, public health and other clinical fields, and some of it comes from before medical school or from short student projects. A few profiles pair research with leadership, advocacy or education activity that publication counts do not capture. Program weightings may change from year to year.
